Impressions from Paramaribo

Suriname Rivier

This summer I am spending some time in Suriname to teach at the Evangelical Theological School in Paramaribo. Suriname is a country with a rich and varied missionary history. Many sacrificed their health, life or both in the service of the Gospel. Some were even murdered, like father Heinink, who was poisoned in 1849, because he preached against the immoral life of a local chief. Despite human pettiness, plantation owners greed and amazing cultural and economic challenges in day temperatures that average just under thirty Celsius all year round, Suriname and its resilient people continue. So does the Church.
